How to Reinvent Yourself: 5 Steps To Self-Reinvention

Do you feel stuck, unfulfilled, or maybe you think it’s time for a change in your life? If you have said yes, you’ve come to the right place because I’ve got the answer to your problem, self-reinvention. Whether you just want more out of life or your life takes an unexpected turn like having to move to another city, it’s alright, sometimes we all crave a new start. Just remember you hold the power to reinvent your life at any time you want.

However, it can be daunting having to shift your mindset and change your identity. It is not an easy task but is doable, that’s why I’m here to walk you through how to reinvent yourself. So, continue reading and I have a little bonus for you!

What Does Reinventing Yourself Mean?

Reinventing yourself is making a conscious decision to reshape your life, whether that be changing your mindset or daily routine. It is aligning yourself with the person you want to become.

Types of Self-Reinventions

There are two ways how to reinvent yourself:

  • Internally: This is when you reconstruct your inward environment, such as changing how you think about certain things, your attitude, beliefs, or values. For instance, embracing an optimistic mindset or letting go of limiting beliefs about yourself are ways to reinvent yourself internally.
  • Externally or Physically: This self-reinvention has to do with changing the more tangible aspects of your life. For instance, changing your appearance, environment, or daily routine. External reinvention is things that are easy for you to see. Like, changing your style into something that makes you more confident and comfortable.

Why Reinventing Yourself is the Key to Growth?

Research shows that people who constantly are self-aware and adjust their goals and identities are more content in the long run. According to psychologist Dr. Carol Dwight, having a “growth mindset” – the belief that we can develop and improve – is important for us to evolve when we feel stagnant.

Simply put, just how you upgrade your phone, is the same as upgrading your life from time to time. You shouldn’t be stuck in old cycles or identities that no longer serve you. You owe it to yourself to grow.

In addition, reinventing yourself isn’t about becoming someone else, but becoming a better and authentic version of yourself. It’s transforming your internal self to align with your outer life.

How to Reinvent Yourself: A 5 Step Process

Step One: Self-Awareness – Recognizing the Need to Change

Firstly, reinventing ourselves starts with self-awareness. To do this, we must reflect on our current self: Are we content with where we are in life? Are we moving in the direction that we want to go? Are we doing what it takes to become our best selves?

Self-awareness is examining where we are, where we want to be, and what actions we need to take to get there.

To be self-aware:

  • 1. Write down your current and future identities: How do you define yourself? How do others view you? After, write down who you want to become: who is she? How does she view herself? How do others perceive her?
  • 2. Ask yourself reflecting questions: What areas of your life feel unfulfilling? What do you need to change or do to feel more aligned with the person you want to become?

Step Two: Shifting Your Mindset – Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Also, to reinvent ourselves, we need to shift our mindset. We can’t become a better version of ourselves by having the same mindset. Hence, it is important for us to cultivate a growing mindset so that we can have room for change and growth, rather than having a fixed mindset that believes that we are set in stone in who we are.

For example: If you struggle with being on time and believe you’re ‘just a late person’, it’s time to flip the script and change the narrative. Instead, tell yourself, “I’m learning ways to be on time, and eventually I’ll become tardy”. Shifting your thinking to a growth mindset will help you embody the version of yourself that you want to become.

To shift your mindset:

  • 1. Challenge your limiting belief: Start acknowledging thoughts that you tell yourself, “I’m not cut for this”, or “I’m not that kind of person.” Replace those thoughts with, “I can do this”, or “I’m becoming and going to be that kind of person.”
  • 2. Tell yourself daily affirmations: Make a list of empowering statements, such as “I have the power to change”, “I can accomplish anything I put my mind to”, or “I am a tardy person.”

Step Three: Creating a New Identity: Align Your Actions with Your Vision

Next, we have to change our identity. Shifting our mindset is good and all, but now it’s time for us to take action and we do that by changing our identity. It’s time for us to embody the version of who we want to be.

In fact, we have to change our bad habits into new ones (because our habits shape who we are), we have to take action. So, if we want to become more confident, productive, or fulfilled, we have to align our actions with that identity.

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear explains that our identity forms our habits and our habits form our identity. It’s a cycle. Therefore, we need to act as if we are the person that we want to become.

For instance, in the book Atomic Habits, James Clear gave an illustration of two people who want to quit smoking. When person one was asked if they wanted a cigarette, they replied, “No, thank you. I’m trying to quit smoking.” In contrast, when person two was offered a cigarette, they answered, “No, thank you. I don’t smoke.” Just like person two, we should identify ourselves as the person we want to become.

To create a new identity:

  • 1. Visualize your future self: What is her daily routine? How does she act in certain situations? Now, write down your vision of your dream self and start embodying the things that she does. For instance, if your reinvented self is into fitness, go on five-minute walks in the mornings or have a 30-minute workout at the gym. Make small steps every day that’ll bring you closer to becoming your better self.
  • 2. Accomplish small wins every day: Micro transformations add up. Therefore, start incorporating habits that align with your higher self into your daily routine, like journaling each morning or writing a to-do list for the next day the night before.

Step Four: Letting Go of The Past – Release What No Longer Serves You

In addition, we can’t become the best version of ourselves by holding on to the past. Sometimes we need to let go of things, certain people, and even parts of ourselves that are holding us back.

Although it is tough, letting go of unhealthy relationships, old habits, or a limiting environment is just what we need for our transformation. Also, letting go of things that no longer serve us can open room to new and wonderful things that will transpire in our lives.

To let go of your past:

  • 1. Declutter your life: Like you would declutter out your closet of old clothes, declutter your life of things that no longer serve you. Clear out everything in your life, that doesn’t align with the person you want to become.
  • 2. Forgive yourself: Let go of the past and give yourself grace. This requires you to forgive yourself from any guilt or shame you might have. Reinventing yourself is about starting over with a clean slate.

Step Five: Consistency – Stick to Your New Identity

Finally, we need to consistently embody our new identity. We should continuously evolve into the person we’re trying to be. Thus, the more we align our actions, mindset, and habits with our new identity, the more we will transform into that person.

To stay consistent:

  • 1. Track your progress: Use a planner or journal to record your journey. Document your small and big wins, and lessons you learn as you go.
  • 2. Celebrate milestones: A great way to stay motivated is by celebrating your successes. We know that self-reinvention is not easy, so celebrating ourselves can be the fuel we need to keep pushing. Hence, celebrate your small victories whether it be sticking to a specific diet for a week or handling a certain situation better.

Here are Some Tips on How To Reinvent Yourself:

  1. Take small steps: Envision the person you want to become and take small actionable steps to get there.
  2. Embrace change: For instance, let’s say you had to unexpectedly move to another city or home. Instead of complaining or getting frustrated, take the opportunity to embrace the change. Also, use this time to start fresh and change your identity. Don’t be afraid of change.
  3. Surround yourself with the right people: Believe it or not but the people we surround ourselves with play a major role in shaping who we become. Studies have proven that we take on the habits of people we are around the most. In fact, when we hang out with certain people, specific regions of our brains reform which affect the way we do things. Simply put, a piece of them becomes a part of us, whether that be a habit, behavior, or value.
  4. Embrace failure and continue evolving: Reinventing yourself shouldn’t be a one all be all thing, it should be something you do throughout your life. Self-reinvention is a continuous process of learning, growing, and sometimes failing. However, don’t let failures define your worth but know that it’s a necessary step to evolve.
